Booking choice: The Ocean Rafting day, from $173 per person. Check dates Tour details
There are dozens of Whitehaven day trips from Airlie Beach, and they look alike in the photos. They are not alike on the water. Some boats anchor in Tongue Bay so you can walk up to the Hill Inlet lookout, the view on every postcard. Most drop you at the calm southern end of Whitehaven, 7 km away from it. Some give you two reef snorkels; others none at all.
Below, we put every tour on this site side by side, using the 2026 from-prices on GetYourGuide and the operators' own itineraries. Three questions decide it: which end of Whitehaven, how much snorkelling, and what kind of boat.
The quick answer
For most people the best Whitsundays day tour is Ocean Rafting's north option ($173): a fast inflatable, the Hill Inlet walk, Whitehaven and two snorkel stops in about 6.5 hours. Red Cat's Thundercat ($174) is the same mix on a fast catamaran with hotel pickup. Non-swimmers should take the big Hill Inlet catamaran from Shute Harbour ($184), and sailors the Camira ($180). The $86 half-day cruise is the cheapest, but it only reaches the southern end.

What are the best tours in the Whitsundays in 2026?
Ocean Rafting, Red Cat's Thundercat, the Camira, the Hill Inlet cruise and Lady Enid all reach Hill Inlet. The half-day cruise does not, and the reef pontoon skips Whitehaven entirely.
Every tour on this site, sorted by what most people ask first: does it go to the Hill Inlet end of Whitehaven? Prices are from-prices per adult in USD for 2026.
| Tour | Boat | Whitehaven | Snorkelling | Length | From |

| Thundercat | Fast catamaran | Hill Inlet walk + lunch on the beach | 2 stops, one off Hook Island | 8 h, hotel pickup | $174 |

Two columns matter more than the price. Whitehaven tells you whether you see the swirls from above or just walk on the sand. Snorkelling tells you whether you get in the water over coral at all. Fix those two and the choice narrows to two or three boats.
Hill Inlet, Whitehaven and two reef snorkels by fast inflatable, back in Airlie by mid-afternoon.
Check dates for the Ocean Rafting dayWhat is the best Whitsundays tour for most people?
Ocean Rafting's north option. It packs the Hill Inlet walk, Whitehaven and two snorkel sites around Hook Island into about 6.5 hours, for $173.
Ocean Rafting runs 11 m semi-rigid inflatables, originally built as rescue craft. They are quick, and that speed buys you time at each stop. Book the north option (the operator calls it Northern Exposure) for the guided national park walk to the Hill Inlet lookout and two snorkel sites. The south option (Southern Lights) swaps the lookout walk for at least two hours on the sand at southern Whitehaven, plus a snorkel.
Lunch is a picnic on the beach, and morning and afternoon tea are included. Drinks on board cost extra. The catch is the ride: an open boat in a chop is wet and bumpy. The operator rules out pregnant travellers, people with mobility problems and anyone prone to seasickness.
A guest from October 2026 summed it up: "I can recommend this tour 100%." She mentioned the free wetsuit loan, the Hill Inlet lookout stop and two snorkel stops.

Our pick for most people: the north option gives you the Hill Inlet lookout, Whitehaven and two snorkel sites in one fast day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Red Cat's Thundercat and Ocean Rafting's north option both give you two snorkel stops plus Hill Inlet. From Hamilton Island, the Ocean Rafting day has about 1.5 hours in the water.
The Thundercat is a custom fast catamaran: more stable than an inflatable, with an onboard toilet and a bus that collects you from your hotel. The first snorkel is a fringing reef; the second is off the northern tip of Hook Island, where caves and a wider mix of fish turn up. One guest wrote: "Hook Island the second stop we did was by far the best!" The same guest warned the ride can be bumpy. Lunch is a buffet on Whitehaven, followed by the guided bush walk to the Hill Inlet lookout and free time on the beach. The bus drops you back around 5 pm.
The other snorkel days give you less time in the water. The Camira stops once at a fringing reef for about 45 minutes, and Lady Enid for about 40. If you are staying on Hamilton Island, Ocean Rafting's Hamilton day schedules about 1.5 hours of reef snorkelling with a personal coral tour. It is a newer listing with few reviews so far, and it only takes guests staying on the island.
Every one of these snorkels is on fringing reef close to the islands. For clearer outer-reef water you need a separate day: see the reef guide.
Two snorkel stops, the Hill Inlet walk, buffet lunch on Whitehaven and a bus from your hotel.

The Hill Inlet and Whitehaven cruise from Shute Harbour. It is a big air-conditioned catamaran, it has no snorkelling, and it still takes you up to the Hill Inlet lookout.
The Hill Inlet cruise (run by SeaLink, now renamed Island Connections) leaves Shute Harbour Marine Terminal at 9 am and is back about 5 pm. It loops around Whitsunday Island past the Molle islands, Cid Harbour, Nara Inlet and Hook Passage, anchors at Tongue Point for a guided walk to the Hill Inlet lookout, then gives you up to two hours on Whitehaven. There are standard and accessible toilets, a bar and a rooftop deck. A free bus picks up along Shute Harbour Road. The listing says it plainly: sightseeing and beach only, no snorkelling or diving.
Age rules on the others, straight from the listings:
- Thundercat: not for children under 4 or wheelchair users (GetYourGuide).
- Camira: not for children under 4. You need to swim and climb in and out of tenders, and no flotation devices are provided.
- Lady Enid: adults only, 18 and over.
- Ocean Rafting: not for pregnant travellers, people with mobility problems or anyone prone to seasickness.

A big, calm catamaran to the Hill Inlet lookout and two hours on Whitehaven, with bus pickups. No swimming needed.
Check dates for the Hill Inlet and Whitehaven cruiseSailing or a fast boat: what is the best way to see the Whitsundays?
A fast boat if you want the most stops; a sail if the day on the water is the point. The Camira is the social option, Lady Enid the quiet one.
The Camira is a big purple sailing catamaran, billed as one of the fastest commercial ones afloat. It leaves the Port of Airlie terminal (check-in 7:30 am) for a 10-hour day: the sail out past Daydream and Hook Islands, Whitehaven, a BBQ lunch on board and a reef snorkel on the way home. Soft drinks are included, and beer and wine are poured from 11 am. The tide decides which end of Whitehaven you get. On a good tide it moors at the north end for the Hill Inlet walk; otherwise you land at the southern end. A guest from Spain called it "One of the best days in the Whitsundays".
Lady Enid is a classic timber ketch that takes 24 adults at most. The day runs the Hill Inlet walk, time on Whitehaven, a snorkel of about 40 minutes and a sunset sail back, with a glass of sparkling wine and a cheese platter. A German guest liked that it was "away from the hectic mass program". Under-18s cannot book.
Both are long days. If you get seasick, a sail on a breezy day is gentler than an inflatable bouncing over the chop, but it is still a day at sea.

Explore the Camira sailing day Tour detailsIs the half-day Whitehaven cruise worth it?
If price is what decides it, yes: $86 gets you up to two hours on the southern end. You do not see Hill Inlet, you do not snorkel, and you change boats at Hamilton Island.
The half-day cruise runs a morning departure (7:15 am to 2:30 pm) or an afternoon one (11:35 am to 6:10 pm) from the Port of Airlie terminal. It stops at Daydream and Hamilton Islands, where you change vessels, then lands at southern Whitehaven for up to two hours. There is a self-guided walk to the southern lookout, beach games and paddle-boards when available, and shade cabanas you can rent. In northerly winds the master may switch to a safer beach.
Its 4.2 rating is lower than the rest, and the common complaint is little time on the sand once the transfers are counted. A guest from France saw it the other way: "We were very well taken care of and were able to spend enough time there". Pick it if you want Whitehaven on a budget. Skip it if Hill Inlet is the photo you came for.
Should you add the outer reef or the Heart Reef flight?
Add the reef pontoon only as a second day, because it never stops at Whitehaven. Add the flight if you want to see Heart Reef, which no boat can take you to.
The Great Barrier Reef cruise ($229) sails about 2 to 3 hours each way to Hardy Reef. Since 20 July 2026, day guests use the refurbished Heart Pontoon there, with roughly four hours at the reef, an underwater observatory and a semi-submarine. The older Reefworld pontoon now takes overnight guests only (what changed at Hardy Reef).
Heart Reef sits inside Hardy Reef, and it is protected: you cannot snorkel or dive it, and boats do not go there. The Heart Reef scenic flight ($244, 65 minutes) passes over it, along with Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, and everyone gets a window seat. Pair it with a south-end beach day and you have seen the swirls from the air anyway.

An hour over Whitehaven, Hill Inlet and Heart Reef, with a window seat for everyone.
Check dates for the Heart Reef flightHow do you book the right Whitsundays day tour?
Check the option name, the departure point and the cancellation window before you pay. Those three trip people up more than the price.
- Pick the option: Ocean Rafting sells north and south as separate options on one listing. Only the north one has the Hill Inlet walk.
- Know where you leave from: Cruise Whitsundays boats (Camira, half-day, reef) leave the Port of Airlie terminal at 24 The Cove Road. Ocean Rafting and Lady Enid use the Coral Sea Marina area. The Hill Inlet cruise leaves from Shute Harbour Marine Terminal, with a free bus from Airlie. Thundercat collects you from your hotel.
- Cancellation: 24 hours on Ocean Rafting, Thundercat, the Hill Inlet cruise and Lady Enid; 2 days on the three Cruise Whitsundays tours.
- Stinger suits: provided on every snorkel and Whitehaven tour here. Wear one in the water from October to May (swimming safety).
- Weather: boats cancel for strong wind, and you get a refund or a new date. Book early in your stay so you have a spare day.
Not sure when to go? The best time to visit has the month-by-month weather.

What is the best way to see the Whitsundays?
By boat to the Hill Inlet end of Whitehaven, with a snorkel stop. Ocean Rafting's north option and Red Cat's Thundercat do both in one day. For Heart Reef you need a scenic flight.
Do all Whitehaven tours go to Hill Inlet?
No. Most boats land at the southern end of the beach. The half-day cruise never goes to Hill Inlet, and the Camira only does when the tide allows.
Which Whitsundays day tour has the most snorkelling?
Red Cat's Thundercat and Ocean Rafting's north option, with two snorkel stops each. For outer-reef snorkelling, book the pontoon cruise to Hardy Reef as a separate day.
Can I do a Whitehaven day tour from Hamilton Island?
Yes. Ocean Rafting runs a full day from Hamilton Island Marina with Hill Inlet, about two hours on the beach and a reef snorkel, for guests staying on the island.
